Jason Welshan Claims First JT Kerr Memorial

It was back to action at Tennessee’s Action Track paying tribute to the late JT Kerr. A packed crowd was on hand with over 50 of the best 604 late models on hand to do battle for $10,040 to win in a 71 lap feature.

The Classic Car division was up first for their 20 lap feature. Shaun Sise and Mark Sise would lead us to green with Marcus Mays, Chris Griffin and Danny Hutchins making up the top five. The top two would quickly put some distance on the pack in the opening laps, looking to settle it amongst themselves. The two Sises were setting a blistering pace and found themselves catching up to the back of the pack putting a lap on the #8 of Hayley White. A late caution would set up a dash to the finish. Mark Sise would get a great run off turn four under Shaun coming to the finish but would come up short.

The 20 lap Street Stock feature would be up next. Robbie Comer picked up the win last time out and would once again earn the pole in hotlap/qualifying earlier in the day. The green waved and Comer would lead the field into turn one ahead of Josh Driskill, Austin Atkins, Donovan Long and Lee Merritt. Trouble for the #20 of Scotty Atkins who went for a spin off the exit of turn four bringing out the caution. Back under green and Merritt would see his top five come to an end as he slowed on the back-stretch with heavy left front damage. David Clark didn’t get a qualifying time and had to start from the rear but was putting on a show coming up through the field. The top two of Comer and Atkins were pulling away until a caution for the #81 of Caleb Ayers went for a spin in turn four. Clark had now worked his way up into the top four setting his sights on Driskill for third. The two would swap the position several times before race end. Atkins had reeled in Comer for the lead and made a deep dive going into turn four to try and get the lead but would get sideways and have to settle for the runner up spot.

Next up was the 71 lap JT Kerr Memorial with $10,040 going to the winner. A huge 50 car field was cut down to just 28 for the A main. Jason Welshan would start on the pole with former JT Kerr Memorial winner, Cameron Weaver keeping him company. The green waved over the stacked field with Welshan, Weaver, Ricky Weiss making a rare 604 entry, Hayden Cardwell and Rusty Ballenger the initial top five. A quick caution on lap 6 for debris would slow the pace. Cory Hedgecock who holds the record for most JT Kerr Memorial wins with four, didn’t have a very good starting spot but was on a mission as he expertly picked his way up through the field. 2020 Nascar Cup Series Champion, Chase Elliott was making his debut at the 4-1-1 but slowed with mechanical problems on lap nine. We wouldn’t be done with the yellow flag as another former JT Kerr Memorial winner, Greg Martin went for a spin in turn two. Mack McCarter had worked his way into the top five and would have a furious battle with Weiss for the fourth spot basically the entire race. Hedgecock had now worked his way all the way up into the top five before the halfway point. Rusty Ballenger had been around the top five the entire race but would slow with issues on lap 65 ending his night just six laps short of the finish. Weiss would find something in the closing laps as he powered by McCarter and Hedgecock into the third spot. Welshan would hold off a late charge from Weaver to win his first ever $10,000 feature event.

The Sportsman feature would be up next for another 20 lap feature. Adam Mitchell and Brad Seagle would lead us to green with Hunter Kerr, Quincy Adams and Nick Miley giving chase. Tim Bounds was set on go as he and the #41 of Thomas Clark did battle for the sixth position. Clark, a former Mini Stock competitor was making his debut in Sportsman at 411 and working on a top five run. The caution would wave for the #58 of Cody Brake who stopped in turn two. Back under green and Adams made his move trying to get into the runner up spot past Seagle but would fall back in line. Trouble for Bounds who would loop his #11 in turn two and had to restart on the tail end. Joe Bray who came one lap short of winning at Mountain View Raceway last weekend, had now found himself in the mix for a top five as he worked over Clark. Burnett, Austin Maples, Cody Rector and Blake Hall would give chase. Burnette had his #18 on top of the scoreboard but it was an intense battle for second between Maples and Rector. The top three put some distance on Hall who held down the fourth position. A little further back saw a great battle between the #171 of Justin McClain and the #72 of  Daryl Teefeteller.
