James remains perfect in the Volunteer State – pockets $4,000 for ‘Hangover’ victory Saturday at 411 Motor Speedway

SEYMOUR, Tenn. (Dec. 29, 2018) — You couldn’t blame Scott James of Lawrenceburg, Ind., if he wanted to move south to the Volunteer State, because he’s only raced twice at 411 Motor Speedway and won on both occasions. James visited victory lane back over Thanksgiving weekend in the third annual Leftover, and Saturday he sped to victory in the ninth annual Hangover for a $4,000 payday.

With 32 Super Late Models timing-in for qualifying, David Crabtree of Maryville lowered the track record which had been set back on Nov. 24 at 13.017 seconds by Michael Chilton of Salvisa, Ky., down to 13.012. … Following Barton on the speed chart were Chris “Chicky’ Barton at 13.043, and James at 13.097.

A tough break for pole-sitter Crabtree at start of the 40-lap main event as he spun in turn two (360 degrees, and kept going), thus allowing James to take the lead over Barton, Jackie Boggs, Ryan King and Corey Hedgecock. Things quickly went from bad to worse for Crabtree, as he slowed on lap 3 with a flat left-rear tire and pulled into the pits retiring from the race.

Back under green with James leading Barton, Boggs, King and Mack McCarter – McCarter was on the move in overtaking King for the fourth spot on lap 6, and six circuits later McCarter got around Boggs for third in the running order. James was feeling pressure from Barton for the lead, and on lap 15 racing off the fourth turn Barton moved to the point. Caution waved on lap 17 when Johnny Cloer slowed on the front straightaway, and with the field under yellow Barton was forced into the pits with a flat right-rear tire. After quick action from his crew he dropped on the rear of the field for the restart.

James moved back into the lead, followed by McCarter and Boggs. James scrubbed the wall in turn three on lap 20, with McCarter getting by to take the lead. McCarter pulled ahead over James by about 10 car lengths, but the “Siver Shark” James reeled the leader back in on lap 28. Just two circuits later McCarter got against the outside wall along the front straightaway, and on lap 30 he slowed to bring the caution out.

With James once again back out front in the lead, he wouldn’t be denied over the final 10 laps in capturing his second special event victory at Tennessee’s Action Track. James, driving the Dolhun Motorsports owned Complete Heat Treating/Wisconsin Steel Industries/Spark-Lin Acres Farms/K-Bar-C Bucking Bulls/Suburban Drywall/Suburban Visuals/G & G Specialized Carriers/Powell Trucking/Pro Power Race Engines/Dolhum Motorsports/No. 83 Rocket Chassis entry, won over Donald McIntosh, King, Eric Webber and Todd Coffman.

Completing the top 10 finishers were McCarter, Barton, Myles Moos, Cloer and Bo Eaton.

The Open Wheel Modified feature turned into a “family affair,” as son (Lucas Lee of Paris, Tenn.) and his father, Michael Lee, battled throughout the race for the lead. Lucas had won back over Thanksgiving weekend at the Leftover, and he was determined to back that victory up by winning the duel with his father in the Hangover. The duo raced side-by-side up off the corners over the last 10 laps, with Lucas maintaining his advantage out front. Bragging rights in the Lee family belong to Lucas, as he held his dad Michael off to claim the $1,200 victory. Finishing third through fifth, respectively, were third generation racer Tyler James (part of the famed “James Gang” of Newport), Kenny Carmichael Sr., and Brent Hudson.

Greg Huskey started from the pole in the Crate Late Model feature, but it was Jesse Lowe jumping out to the lead at the start over Huskey, Jason Cardwell, Logan Roberson and Heath Alvey. Alvey slowed in the early laps with rear-end issues. Cardwell and Roberson battled for position before Roberson grabbed the spot on lap 6, however, Roberson’s strong run ended just past the halfway distance with suspension damage. … Good racing up front for the lead between Lowe, Huskey, Anthony White, Cardwell and Andy Ogle. Lowe slowed giving up the lead with steering issues with just four laps remaining, thus opening the door for Ogle to take the lead. Ogle, from Gatlinburg, went on to record the $1,500 victory over Huskey, White, Charles Bowie and Cardwell.

Aaron Guinn took the lead at start of the Sportsman Late Model feature ahead of Ricky Smith, Brandon Miller, Clyde Stanton and William Blankenship. But caution quickly waved when Chad Smith got into Rodney Kiker, with Adam Mitchell also getting collected. Back under green with Guinn leading, Stanton quickly got around Miller to take over the third spot, and leader Guinn, Ricky Smith and Stanton began to distance themselves from those in pursuit. Just past the halfway mark Smith passed Guinn for the lead, and a few laps later Guinn and Stanton got together with Guinn spinning into the infield to end his race. Once out front there would be no denying Ricky Smith a trip to victory lane as he held Stanton, Blankenship, Kip Sawyer and Miller off for the $800 win.

Eric Hux of Parrottsville set fast-time in Modified Street qualifying to earn right to start from the front row of the 20-lap feature. Hux grabbed the lead on the start and behind him Shannon Emery, Wayne Rader, Brady Lee and Kurt Owens were battling for position. With Hux in command out front, the racing between Emery, Rader, Lee and Owens was worth the price of admission itself as they jockeyed for real estate, while the trio of Eddie Stewart, Robbie Comer and David Clark were within striking distance. … Owens slowed late in the race with a flat tire, thus taking him out of contention – while Emery and Rader tangled and the caution was attributed to Rader and he was forced to restart from rear of the field. Back under green and it was clear that Hux was the dominant car as he cruised to the $700 victory over Stewart, Comer, Clark and Emery.

Lee Merritt of Knoxville jumped out into the lead in the Classic feature over Shaun Sise and Will Carey. Just past halfway Carey tangled with a slower car to bring the caution out. With the field under yellow slowly circling the track, rain began to fall and officials were forced to stop racing and the win went to Merritt, followed by Sise, Tim Bounds, Charles Bates and Mac Lockhart.
