Michael Courtney Scores Sportsman Showdown Win

Tennessee’s Action Track opened up the Fall season with a $1,000 to win Sportsman Showdown.

The 604 Late Models were up first for a 25 lap feature. Greg Martin would lead us to green with Heath Alvey, Tyler Price, Brad Seagle and Chris Coffey your top five on the start. The top two quickly began to put some distance on third as the laps ticked away. Brad Seagle had the pressure turned up on Price as he tried to move his #31 into the third spot behind the leaders. The race looked to be on the verge of going caution free until Price got tangled up with a couple slower cars. He’d have to give up his second place run and restart at the tail-end of the lead lap. Back green and Alvey was now in the runner-up spot as he tried to reel in Martin. Price, who was trying to rally back after his spin had now caught and passed Nicholas Phillips, putting himself back into the top five before the end. Martin would pull away in the closing laps and pick up the win.

One of the biggest field of Street Stocks were on hand to put on a great show for the fans. A strong field of sixteen cars lined up for the 20 lap feature. Robbie Comer is always strong at the 4-1-1 so it was of little surprise when he put his #42 on top of the scoreboard on the start. Comer, Ryan Watson, Brady Lee and Greg Husky made up your top runners on the start. Trouble for the #7 of Chris Kelley who would spin in turn two collecting the #88 of Sam Burgess. Both cars would have damage but would be able to continue. Back under green and Brady Lee would pounce on the restart moving from third to the lead off turn two. Former leader Comer would slow with a flat right rear tire but would return. However, his troubles wouldn’t be over as later he would tangle with Chris Coffey which resulted in both their nights coming to an early end. The restarts seemed to be the best time to gain positions as husky put his #23 into second slipping past Watson. He’d reel in the leader the final laps getting a fantastic run on the exit of turn four but would come up just a couple feet short of the win.

Next up was the 30 lap Sportsman Showdown. Michael Courtney would lead us to green with Curtis Thomas, Terry Poore, Dustin Ward and Adam Mitchell in chase. Joe Bray would find trouble as he’d bring out the first caution but would return to the track after some attention from his crew. Back under green and Poore would make his move on the restart getting by Mitchell and into the second spot. The #92 of Cory Cate seemed to have some handling issues on his machine as he’d bring out a couple cautions and had to retire for the rest of the night. The top two began to inch away but the fight was on behind them as Thomas and Mitchell battled it out. The #44 of David Beeler was having probably his best run of the year, working his way into the top five. Mitchell seemed to have a better long run car as he moved into the third spot behind Courtney and Poore. Trouble for the #G8 of Logan Amy who went for a spin on lap 25 setting up a short sprint to the finish. The cautions wouldn’t be over however as the #28 of Zach Weich made hard contact with the turn one wall ending his night with heavy damage. The Crown Vic Class has been growing at the 4-1-1 all season. We’d have a strong eight car field on hand and they put on the best race they’d had all season. Johnny Grooms got the lead on the start looking for his second consecutive win. Trouble would find the #J1 of Joseph McGill as he and the #5 of Chris Wilson would get together, sending both into the infield. After a couple false starts the race got underway until a caution for the #2 of Troy Davenport would slow the pace once again. It was an extremely close battle but Grooms would hold to to pick up back to back wins.
