Jimmy Owens Wins Third Scott Sexton Memorial

It was a blistering hot day both on and off the track as the 4-1-1 was back in action with the 10th annual Scott Sexton Memorial.

The Classic Car feature was up first for their 20 lap feature. It would be the #35 of Mark Sise and the #59 of Shaun Sise leading us to green. Jack Kress, Garrett Smith and Christian Runyon made up your top five on the start. Lee Merritt was making his return to Classic Car racing as he looked to work his way into the top five. Runyon, Merritt and Smith had a fantastic battle for position in the early laps. Trouble for the #59 of Phil Blackford who slowed with mechanical issues ending his night early. As Sise began to run away, Shaun Sise would pull off track with issues and retire for the rest of the race. The fight was on for the third position in the second half of the feature. Up front it was all Mark Sise who pulled away for the win.

Owens was on go as he moved past Miller taking over the fourth position. Trouble for the #07 of Hayden Cardwell as he and Zach Sise made contact. Cardwell would smack the outside wall doing heavy damage to his #07 and ending his night just three laps in. On the restart the top two began to inch away from the rest of the field. Terry Poore and Jason Welshan had their own battle going as they tried to move up into the top ten. Rusty Ballenger was coming off a big win at Volunteer Speedway Friday and was turning up the heat on Zach Sise for the 6th position. Hall of Famer Ronnie Johnson didn’t have a good qualifying effort but was putting on a show as he was charging towards the top five. Brandon Kinzer and Blake Brown would lead the field to the green ahead of Scott Shelton, Kaleb Trent and Jamie Mosley. The caution would on the first lap as the #47 of Coty Adams would lose a right rear tire ending his night before it began. The #99 of Blake Brown would give up his second position under car by exiting the racing surface with engine issues. Wayne James started in the 8th position but seemed to have found his groove as the #4 was moving up with his sights on the top five. Another caution, this one on lap 3 as Chad Ogle went for a spin in turn four. Back under green and Kinzer was on cruise control out front as he quickly pulled away from the rest of the field. He’d pull away to a huge lead and pick up the win.

Next up was the 52 lap Scott Sexton Memorial paying $10,052 to win. A very stacked field of drivers were on hand to pay tribute to the late “Superman”. Stacy Boles had earned his way into the race through the B main but rear end issues on the pace laps would end his night. The green waved and Dale McDowell lead the field to green with Ricky Weiss, Mack McCarter, Jimmy Owens and Ice Bowl Champion Christian Hanger in chase. 2020 Scott Sexton Memorial winner Cory Hedgecock was moving forward as he moved past Hanger and into the top five. Ryan King and Dakota Knuckles had one of the best battles for position early on. McDowell had pulled away from the pack but Owens had reeled in McCarter for the third spot. He’d get the caution he wanted as David Payne went for a spin in turn two. Back under green and Owens was on a mission as he powered past McCarter into the runner up spot. Hanger had a top five run going early but slipped back throughout the feature. Owens had found his groove on the very top of the track as he ate into the lead McDowell had built up. Coming off turn two he got a huge run and powered into the lead. Owens would pull away in the finals laps to pick up his third Scott Sexton Memorial win at 411.

Brad Seagle earned the pole for the Sportsman feature in qualifying earlier in the day. He and Addison Cardwell would show the way for the 20 lap feature. Cardwell would take the top spot with Seagle, Adam Mitchell, Joe Bray and Cody Gloyne in his tire tracks. It was a tight battle for the lead as Seagle began working the low line under Cardwell who kept his #07 a couple grooves higher up the track. Adam Mitchell was coming off a win the last race at 411 and had another strong run going as he fought off Joe Bray in the early laps. Mitchell would get away from Bray and close in on the top two making it a three car battle for the lead. It looked like Cardwell was gonna hold on but he would lose a driveshaft just four laps shy of the finish ending his night. A restart with just four laps to go would set up a great battle for the win. Seagle would hold on to score the victory with Mitchell close behind.

The Front Wheel Drive feature would be up next for another 20 lap feature. Jacob Sharp, Nathan Adams and Cody Rector would be your top three on the start. Trouble would show it’s ugly head in this one a lot as the #7 of Elias Dalton would spin bringing out the caution. The yellow wasn’t done for the night as Ray Wyatt and Chad Thompson would tangle in turn two. After a lengthy cleanup it was back to racing with Rector slipping by Adams into the runner up spot. The top four were pulling away until a scary accident on lap 8 saw the #23 of Angel Jolly crash hard into the turn one wall bringing out the red flag. Jolley would have to be cut out of her machine by emergency crews. This would end the Front Wheel Drive feature giving the win to Jacob Sharp.

Trouble for the #87 of Zane Littleton who went for a spin on the opening lap bringing out the caution. It would be a short night for Littleton as he pulled off track just a couple laps later ending his night. Cardwell had put the pressure on Bunch for the runner up spot as the two raced door to door basically the entire event. Thomas had ran away to a massive lead until a late caution for Cade Brookshire slowed the pace just four laps short of the finish. it wouldn’t be an issue for Thomas as he again ran away on the restart to score the win.
