Riley Hickman Dominates Crate Nationals

After a couple weeks away it was back to business at The 4-1-1 with the 2019 Crate Nationals.

A strong filed of Classic Car drivers were on hand to battle. Shaun Sise has had a great 2019 and once again put his #16 on point as the green flag waved to start the 20 lap feature. Will Carey, Lee Merritt, Shane Taylor and Hayston Collett made up your top five on the start. Trouble for the #26 of Adam Ogle as he had two spins bringing out the caution twice so he was done for the night. Back under green and Collett was on go as he moved his #3 up into the fourth position. Carey had a strong start but slipped back through the pack throughout the feature. The caution would wave late in the race as Josh Chesney and Tim Bounds would get together in turn three. Shaun Sise had hit his setup just right as he held on to pick up another win.

Next up was the debut of the 602 Crate Late Models. Matt Tharp would take the lead on the start ahead of Jeremy Broome, Austin Atkins, Taylor Cole and Darren Deverell. Atkins would get into one of the tires on the inside of the track but continued on despite heavy front end damage. Tharp would run away to a big lead and pick up the first ever 602 Late Model win.

2: #12 Jeremy Broome
3: #D7 Darren Deverell
4: #14 Austin Atkins
5: #66 Taylor Cole

Next up was the 20 lap B-Hobby/Super Street feature. Josh Henry would put the familiar #25 into the lead as the green waved ahead of McKenlee Hall, Duke Lowe, Bobbie Petty and Michael Millsap. Petty would try to work over Lowe in the opening laps for the third spot. The #88 of Sam Burgess was also trying to move forward as he turned up the pressure on Millsap for the fourth spot. The caution would wave late slowing the pace erasing the lead Henry had built up. Lowe hadn’t shown his usual speed but took off on the restart getting past Hall to move into the second spot. He made one last run at Henry but would come up short at the finish.

The $3,000 to win 2019 Crate Nationals were up next. Pierce McCarter set a blistering lap in qualifying to earn the pole for the 51 lap feature. The green waved and it was Riley Hickman who took the lead with McCarter, Cory Hedgecock, and Jensen Ford in chase. Hedgecock wasn’t in his usual #23 but was still a serious threat as always. A great battle between Jason Welshan and Blake Craft early on for position. Track Champion Trevor Sise didn’t have a great start as he had to race his way in through the B main but was picking them off as the early laps ticked away. He and Ross White had their own battle going on for position. Hedgecock had now worked his way up on the back of McCarter for the second spot. The two would get together sending Hedgecock bouncing off the front stretch wall bringing out the caution. Hedgecock would exit the track and retire for the rest of the event. Hickman was setting a furious pace and found himself in lap traffic. Welshan was having a great run but almost looped his #2 in turn four but kept going only losing one spot to Jesse Lowe. Trouble for the #29 of Rusty Ballenger who slowed and pulled off track. Out front it was all Riley Hickman who made it look easy as he ran way to a big lead picking up the win.

Eric Wells would set fast time in Open Wheel qualifying as he was making his first Modified start at 411 in 2019. It would be Wells who got the lead on the start with Jimmy Dalton, Wayne James, Brian Nantz and Billy Palmer rounding out the top five. James and Nantz had a great fight for the third spot in the opening laps as James seemed to be one of the few who wanted to work the high line. Palmer and Tyler James also had a good battle just behind the two. Trouble for the #99 of Jerry Pyles as he would bring out the caution with a spin. Nantz had a great run as he moved up into the second spot behind Wells. The top three put some distance on the rest of the pack as we moved into the runner up spot. Wells would pull out to a big lead and pick up his first Modified win at 411.

The Front Wheel Drive feature would get off to a rocky start as a multi car crash on the start involving Bryan Williams, and Jeremy Wyatt among others would red flag the feature. After a lengthy cleanup it was back to racing with Jeremy McCloud out front over Mitchell Coggins, Jordan West and Jacob Sharp. Jonathan Purkey would slow with problems bringing out the caution setting up a restart. Trouble would also find the #7 of Mike Jones who found himself pointing the wrong way down the backstretch. Sharp had another strong run as he worked his way up into the second spot. Several cautions would wave in the second half of the feature. McCould would hold off a late charge from Sharp to pick up his first win at 411.
