Ross White Wins Thriller

After a washout the night before it was a special Sunday edition of racing at Tennessee’s Action Track.
The Mini Stock were making another visit to the 411 with some strong competitors on hand to do battle. The overnight rain had made for an incredibly fast track. Donnie Turpin would break the mini stock track qualifying record at a 16.871. The green waved and it was former track champion John Byers who took control on the start ahead of Turpin, Tommy Newton, Marcus Thompson and Shane Bullock. Turpin was all over the leader from the get go as he was working the low line. Five laps into the feature the lead would swap hands as Turpin powered by Byers off the exit of turn two. Trouble would find the #3 of Walter Walsh and the #1 of Thompson as both drivers would slow late in the race. Newton wasn’t done as he put the pressure on his teammate Byers for the runner up spot. Up front it was all Turpin who pulled away to a big lead getting his first win of the season at 411.

Next up was the always exciting BHobby feature. This class has quickly grown into a fan favorite for good reason. The smooth raving surface gave us another new track record as Tim Kilby set a blisteringly fast 15.613 lap in qualifying. A couple false starts and we’d eventually get racing with Lamar Hughes showing the way over Josh Henry, Duke Lowe and Tracy Wolfe. Kilby had some mechanical issues and seemed to have trouble keeping his machine running as he slowed multiple times. Duke Lowe came into the night having won the last three straight races. He was on a mission to make it four straight but his night would come to an end as his engine expired as he was battling for the runner up spot. Hughes would hold off Josh Henry to get his first win of the season.

Next up was the 25 lap Crate/Sportsman Shootout. A huge field of the best drivers in the area were on hand to fight it out for the $1,200 payday. Zach Sise would earn the pole for the feature. Sise, Ross White, Jesse Lowe, Greg Martin and Matt Tharp would make up your top five on the start. Trouble would find the #144 of Kyle Courtney early on as he slowed to a stop bringing out the yellow. Back under green and Rusty Ballenger was trying to work his way up through the pack as he raced alongside Bradley Lewelling. Trevor Sise seemed to have a long run car as he picked them up and put them down as the laps ticked away. Trouble again found another driver as Drew Kennedy slowed to a stop in turn one and had to be towed off track. Matt Tharp had a very stout machine but would slow with a flat tire while inside the top five. White had reeled in Sise for the lead and powered by him off turn two putting his #0 on point. Trevor Sise would make a late move past his brother getting the runner up spot. White would hold him off in the final laps to score the win.

Lee Merritt was a late arrival but the season Champion did make it to qualifying and earned the pole for the feature. However it would be the outside pole sitter Shaun Sise who got the top spot on the start. Sise, Merritt, Tim Bounds, Mark Sise and Adam Engel would make up the top five. Merritt was all over Sise as he was looking for another win in his already impressive season. The top two would swap some paint several times in the first half of the race. They would get tangled up with Sise losing a right rear tire and crashing into the turn four wall. Merritt would continue on but the night was over for Sise. Merritt would also slow later on with a cut tire. Adam Engel would survive the chaos and pick up the win.

We hadn’t seen  Aaron Barley in 2019 but he made a great debut as he was fastest in Open Wheel qualifying. Barley would set sail on the start ahead of Jamie Mosley, Jimmy Dalton, Wayne James and Brian Nantz. James had a very fast car as he moved into the third spot past 2019 Champion Jimmy Dalton. A wild wreck between the #J4 of Tyler James and the #22 of Nantz. James would continue on but Nantz had heavy right side damage and was done for the night. Another spot for Wayne James as he moved past Mosley into the runner up spot. That’s as far as he would get as Barley had pulled out to a huge lead and went on to pick up his first win at 411.

Another track record would fall as Brad Cross would break his own track qualifying record in FWD at an 17.725. The top two were both under the old track qualifying record. Jacob Sharp would put his #1 on top of the scoreboard ahead of Cross, Kevin Sexton and Jordan West. Trouble for the #09 of Chris Lewis as he had to pull off track with a cut tire but would rejoin. Heavy damage for the #90 of Nick Adams who had the entire right side torn off his machine. Back under green and the fight was on for the lead as Cross was all over Sharp. However, cross would have problems in turn four collecting the #9 of Sexton and the #25 of West ending all three drivers nights. After that it still wasn’t easy going as Sharp now had to deal with the #7 of Mike Jones. Jones was working the leader over until he lost a tire ending his bid for the win.
