King scores Memorial Day weekend win

On a very special Memorial Day weekend, the fans filled 411 Motor Speedway to celebrate one of our nations pastimes, the sport of auto racing. Chris Rickett, who currently sits 2nd in points has dominated the season so far. It looked to be more of the same for the Morristown, TN native as he won his heat race earlier in the day. With the field lined up and the fans ready for some racing the green waved and the 2014 Street Stock champion put the nose of his #11 machine into the wind and set sail with Fox and Rickett close behind. Rickett wasn’t about to ride around as he looked inside Watson coming off turn #2 for the lead. A quick caution on lap #3 slowed the pace and erased the gap the top two had quickly built up. Back under green the action was intense as Rickett and Dwayne Fox looked to have made contact coming off turn #4. Fox would head pitside with a cut tire. By lap #7 Rickett was all over Watson for the race lead. The two made contact several times resulting in Rickett having to pull off with a flat tire. Jeff McLemore hasn’t been around much so far this season but he looked to have his #J3 machine on point as he moved into the runner up spot just behind Watson. After restarting from the back of the pack, Rickett had already moved back into the top 5 with an awesome three wide pass down the back-stretch. The night would go from bad to worse for Fox who spun late in the race setting up a green white checker. Watson would hold off a charge from McLemore to pick up the win.

Clocking in at a 14.843 Ryan Carey put his #555 machine on the pole for the 25 lap Sportsman feature. Keeping him company on the front was the current Sportsman points leader Terry Poore who clocked in at 14.988. With the green out Poore took over the lead on the opening lap. The caution waved before the first lap was complete for a three car wreck. After an extended caution for cleanup Poore and Carey quickly pulled out from the rest of the pack. A little further back saw Clyde Stanton battling it out with David Kerr for the 6th spot. Brian Courtney made his move past Rader to take over the 4th spot after just 6 laps had been completed. Courtney wasn’t done as he was all over the back of Dalton King. With 12 laps complete Poore started inching away from everyone else out front. A caution would put Carey and company back on his bumper and back into contention. The strong run King had had a rough patch as he went for a spin coming off turn #2 while running second. With just 6 laps left David Kerr made his move to take the 3rd spot away from the defending Sportsman champion Wayne Rader. Trouble would find Courtney and Stanton as both spun together on lap #18. Stanton would continue on but the night was over for Courtney. Poore would hold off Carey to pick up his 3rd win of the season.

After having issues last weekend Kyle Courtney looked to get himself and his season back on track. It wasn’t meant to be however as he had issues on the very start of the race ending his night. John Byers took the lead on the restart and once again quickly drove off into the sunset. Points leader Chris Griffin began working on another top 5 run while facing off with Tommy Metler for the 3rd spot. Up front it was all Byers who had already pulled out to a good 10 car length lead over the battle for second. The caution waved on lap #5 for Michell Fox slowing on the track. Back under green Bryant Idles was on the move, taking over the 2nd spot just short of halfway. By lap 17 Byers had pulled out to a half track lead for the second week in a row.

Up next on the bracket would be a rare visit from the Classic Car division. If you know one thing about this class, it’s that the race is never over till the winner crosses the flag and tonight was no different. Joe “hotrod” Keck took the top spot in the opening laps of the 20 lap feature event. It was anything but a Sunday drive as Chris Evans filled his rear-view mirror early on. The top 3 began to pull away, looking to settle in amongst themselves. Trouble found Bart Baxter early on and he pulled off the track early on. The pace was slowed on lap #8 as Ritchie Overholser stopped on the track. On the restart Justin Overton threw his name in the mix and took over the runner up spot. He wasn’t done there and took a look under the leader at the halfway point. The two would literally run side by side the entire second half of the race thrilling the crowd. Coming off the final turn Overton found some traction on the inside and inched out Keck in a photo finish.

The final event of the night would be the always exciting Late Models with $1,500 on the line to the winner. Chase King would put everyone on notice setting fast time in qualifying with a 13.953 lap. Trevor sise would set 2nd fast time at a 13.954. King was an absolute rocket on the start powering into the lead with Sise in chase. Current co point leader Jason Cardwell looked inside Ross White early on for the 3rd spot behind the top two. By lap 7, King and Sise had pulled out to a large lead over Cardwell and White. With a little help from lap traffic Sise erased the lead King had built up on lap 20. A little further back saw Jason Manley and Eddie King Jr racing hard for the 4th spot. With a caution on lap 28 the field got another chance to break up the King/Sise battle. Mike weeks who came into the night tied in the points for the lead pulled off the track and retired for the evening. Cardwell would also have issues late in the race and fell outside the top 5 in the closing laps. Sise was all over King up front, looking inside coming off turn two almost every lap but it wouldn’t be enough to keep King from scoring the victory.
