Ballenger wins rain shortened NeSmith feature

Michael Courtney came into the night with an incredible 13 wins on the season. He started on the front row of the 20 lap Mini Stock feature along with Tommy Metler. The green waved and Courtney set sail looking to continue his dominance. Starting in the 3rd spot, Chris Griffin wasn’t gonna roll over for anyone as he put his machine into the 2nd spot in chase of Courtney. Metler, who started on the front row began to slip back as Jason Gregory made a move to advance his position. McNabb also put pressure on Metler for position as the laps ticked away.  Up front Courtney had a huge lead and went on to pick up his 14th win of the season.

The Sportsman class has had some amazing racing in the 2014 season. Tonight would be no different as a redraw put Kip Sawyer and Terry Poore started out front. The green wasn’t out long as a crash in turn three between Robert Horsley and Reid Scott brought out the caution. Horsley would continue on but the night was over for Scott. After a red flag the race resumed and Poore took the lead. After another quick caution Jordon Horton moved himself up into the 2nd spot. A great battle between points leader Wayne Rader and Scott Gardner caught the attention of the crowd for the 5th position.  Horton put pressure on Poore trying to wrestle the lead away. Finally Horton got what he needed as Poore got up out of the groove in turn 4 allowing him to get past and take the lead away. A late caution gave Poore one final shot but it was Horton’s night.

Up next was the 30 lap NeSmith feature. Ryan King and Rusty Ballenger continued their hot streak by once again starting on the front row. The race would take a scary turn as a stack up in turn two sent Justin Summers upside down, also collecting Gary Crittenden. After a lengthy red flag for cleanup the race went back to green. Ryan King and Rusty Ballenger would fight door to door for several laps but King took the point and began to pull away from his point rival. Bradley Lewelling flexed his muscle early on and moved into the top 5. The drive wouldn’t end well however as he pulled into the pit area. Up front King had built a big lead but he tangled with a slower car cutting his tire. With King in the pits, that handed the lead over to Ballenger. The green waved but action came to a stop on lap 18 as the rain set in. It wouldn’t let up and the race was called official.
