Sise, Works pick up late model wins

On a day originally predicted to rain, it was a bright and sunny day with the Open Wheel Modifieds making their much anticipated return.
Up first on the docket was the $1,000 to win Crate Late Model feature. A 15.491 got the pole for Tanner Works with Chris Wilson keeping him company on the front row. The green waved and it was Works who took control of the 12 car field. Ross White was on the move early as he worked the low line coming off turn two under Wilson for second. It was a three car battle up front as they put distance on Devin Stuart who held down the 4th spot. Adam Tolliver had issues in qualifying and didn’t turn in a lap and the issues clearly weren’t over as he pulled pitside after just a handful of laps. Works had no breathing room as Ross White was all over the back of his #35t machine as the laps ticked off. The field got single file in the second half with Works slowly pulling away to a small advantage. Works would pick his way through lap traffic late and pick up his first 411 win.

Up next was the 20 lap Mini Stock feature. Last weekend Thomas Clark ended John Byer’s dominance and broke his win streak. This time around the two would once again pick up their rivalry by starting side by side on row one. Clark would take the advantage on the start ahead of Byers, David Stooksburry and Joe McKinney. It wouldn’t take the #83 very long as Byers isn’t one to be happy with running second. Coming off turn two Byers got a big run on the inside and powered by into the lead. McKinney was also on the move as he worked his #55 machine into the third spot just behind the battle up front for the lead. Shawn Henry was making his 2016 debut at 411 motor speedway with a brand new car but pulled off track early with problems. The top two had ran away from the pack until a caution for Travis Fox slowed the pace. After a strong run throughout the race, Stooksburry would slow late with engine issues and wouldn’t see the finish. Byers inched away from Clark in the closing laps to pick up another win.

Up next was the Classic Car feature and it was indeed a wild one. Several cautions in the first couple laps delayed the start but once things finally got underway it was John Stevens and Lee Merritt who took control. Scott Lacy seemed to be having some handling issues on his #24 as he had trouble keeping it pointed in the right direction and retired early. Tim Stevens, Eli Keck and Adam Pressley were three wide off turn two putting on a great show for the packed grandstands. After slipping back earlier in the race, Lee Merritt had made his way to the leader. Stevens would put up a fight and wasn’t about to give it up easy but Merritt was just too strong to hold off. Adam Pressley also had a strong run going once again as he had moved his way into the third spot. A spin by Tim Stevens would set up a restart and and it was intense. Going into turn one Stevens dove under the lead and the two made contact resulting in Merritt going for a spin. The caution would be called on Stevens so the lead would go back to the #78. Merritt would hold on to pick up the win once again.

Trevor Sise once again set fast time in Steelhead Late Model qualifying turning in a 15.412 second lap time. The green waved and Chaos wasn’t far behind it as Zach Sise, Josh Henry and Dan Tipton got tangled up in a chain reaction crash on the start. Sise and Henry would be able to continue on with cosmetic damage but the night was over for Tipton. Chris Barton qualified in the 7th position but found himself almost going for a spin off turn four and had to regroup. Josh Henry had reeled in Zach Sise for the third spot despite both cars having damage. Trevor Sise was on a rail once again as he had put a full straight over Dakotah Knuckles who held down the runner up spot. Sise found himself in some lap traffic but it didn’t slow the current point leader down any. With Sise running away from the field the battle was on for third once again between Zach Sise and Josh Henry. The two would swap paint coming off turn four but the younger of the Sise brothers would hold onto the position. Up front it was all Trevor Sise who cruised to his 7th win of 2016.

The Open Wheel Modifieds made their return to 411 Motor Speedway in their first race of 2016. 10 cars took time in qualifying and it was Logan Hickey who was the fastest at a 16.833. With that lap, Hickey was the only car under the 17 second mark. Trouble would find Amos Bunch early on as he smacked the turn two wall on the second lap of the race. Bunch would continue on but had to retire just a couple laps later. Don Adams qualified in the second row but put his name in the mix early on by working the inside under Hickey and Jeff Hamby who fought for the top spot. A caution for Tyler James spinning in turn four would slow the pace and let us catch our breath. Back under green and Hickey who had slid back on the initial start had found something on the high line. The top three were under a blanket the rest of the way with Hickey finally using the cushion off turn four to rocket past Hamby and into the lead. Hickey wouldn’t look back and went on to pick up the win.
1: #16 Logan Hickey
2: #15 Jeff Hamby
3: #90 Don Adams
4: #43 Ben Petrey
5: #36 Billy Palmer
6: #142 Virgil Parriman

8: #4 Tyler James

After breaking his own track record last Saturday, Skimp Henry would once again set fast time in Street Stock quaffing earning the pole for the 20 lap event. Rocky Ogle wouldn’t be far off his pace as the #9 got the outside pole. The green waved and Henry put his #25 machine on point ahead of Ogle, Dale Watson and Freddy Hillard. Hillard had his hands full with Jerry Hux who wanted his position in the top five. Brandon Crawford and his #00 machine wouldn’t see the finish as he pulled off early. With the top three pulling away the battle for fourth was still intense between Hillard and Hux. A caution for MJ Collier would slow the action and put Ogle on the back of the leader. Back under green and Ogle worked the inside but Henry had the momentum on the outside and kept the top spot. Ogle would make a charge late but it wasn’t enough as Skimp Henry picked his 8th straight win.

5: #01 Jerry Hux
