Hedgecock makes late pass for win

Beautiful weather greeted fans and racers for another exciting night of racing at Tennessee’s Action Track.

First up would be the 20 lap Sportsman feature. Fans were seeing double as a couple #c11 machines of Michael Courtney and Clyde Stanton would lead us on the start. After winning a couple races in a row Kyle Courtney would have his work cut out for him if he wanted to keep that streak alive. Trouble would find the young driver early on however as he and Terry Poore made contact on the front stretch in the early laps bringing out the caution. The battle was on with the green back in the air inside the top five. Coming down the backstretch Heath Alvey and Zach Sise made significant contact but both would somehow be able to continue with no caution. As the top two began to inch away, Brad Seagle had made his way into the top five and was putting the pressure on Jed Emert. The caution would wave again on lap 9 for Kyle Cole who spun slowing the pace. More trouble on the restart this time for Brandon Taylor and Adam Mitchell as the two got tangled up on a chain reaction crash. The restart was the best time to make your move and Heath Alvey did just that slipping past Zach Sise and into third. Courtney would hold on in the final laps to pick up the win.

John Byers had won five straight Mini Stock races but the #83 was nowhere to be seen on the day. Chris Kennedy and Randy Wade would lead us to green for the 20 lap Mini Stock feature. Steve Owens Jr wasn’t gonna wait around and he had the heat turned up quickly on Tommy Metler for the third spot early on. Kennedy seemed to have the strongest car of the night as he pulled away from Wade and Owens Jr.The race was on from third through fifth as they ran bumper to bumper basically every lap of the race. With just 5 laps left Anthony Dixon pulled off track with trouble. The race would run caution free with Kennedy cruising to his first win of the year.

The always entertaining Classic Car feature third on the call sheet this week. Justin Overton and Lee Merritt would lead us to green with 20 laps on the docket. Overton would take the top spot as he’s done many times over the past two seasons with Merritt, Joe Keck and Richie Overholser in chase. Joe Keck was all over the back of Merritt as the two fought it out for the runner up spot behind Overton who was inching away out front. Chris Evans was on the move as well as he found his way into the top five. Overton once again his his #98 machine hooked up and was running away from the pack until a caution on lap 10 for Michael Maiden slowed the pace. On the restart it was once again on for the 5th spot this time between Eli Keck and Overholser. Joe Keck had kept the pressure on Merritt and wasn’t letting up as the laps ticked off. A late spin by Jordan Yeary would give the field one last shot at Overton but no one had anything for him.

Up next was the 30 lap Late Model Feature. After dominating last week, Trevor Sise picked up where he left off by earning the pole with a 14.084 second lap time. After a couple false starts, Sise would take control of the 21 car field with Corey Hedgecock and Jason Cardwell rounding out the top three. The winner from a couple weeks ago Jason Welshan was on the move as he was closing in on Chris Barton for the fifth position. Hedgeock again was on the gas as he powered past Jason Cardwell going into turn one setting his sights on Sise. Welshan seemed to have the setup on his #29 car on point as he continued his drive to the front past Cardwell on lap 7. A  spin by Jesse Helton would slow the pace erasing the lead Sise had built up. On the restart Hedgeock dove under the lead brining the fans to their feet but the momentum on the high line propelled Sise back into the lead. Two of the future starts of Late Model racing would fight it out tooth and nail for the lead in an electrifying display of pure talent. Every lap Hedegcock would dive low and slide up in front but Sise would pull off several beautiful cross over moves to take the lead back. A caution on lap 20 slowed the pace and everyone had to take a minute to catch their breath. Jason Welshan wasn’t gonna let anyone forget about him as he closed in on the top two making it a three car fight between some of the best Late Model drivers anywhere. Just seven laps left and Hedgeock would not give up the fight as he once again dove under Sise and executed a perfect slide job to finally take the lead away. Sise wouldn’t be able to find a way back by this time and had to settle for second.

Skimp Henry set fast time in Street Stock qualifying with a 15.416 lap being the only car under the 16 second mark. However Skimp had won three straight races so by the rules he had to start 6th instead of the pole. The green waved and it was Rocky Ogle who took the top spot with Tim Kylby and last years Champion Tracy Wolfe in chase. Henry has had the dominate car the past several races so it was no surprise to anyone when the Newport, TN native was already in the third spot after just two laps. Kilby has had a tough season so far and it wasn’t gonna be any better this time around as he slowed just 4 laps in. On the restart Henry made his move putting himself into the lead. A caution on lap 12 for Chad McLemore would slow the pace putting Ogle on the back bumper of the leader. The top three had remained unchanged for several laps but Sam Burgess changed all that when he past Wolfe and took over the third position. Another spin by Chad McLemore and he had to retire for the evening. Rocky Ogle would close in on Henry in the final handful of laps but it wasn’t enough to stop Skimp Henry from getting his fourth in a row.
