Welshan returns to victory lane

Earlier start times because of the cool weather did not deter the drivers or the race fans for another exciting evening of racing action at 411 Motor Speedway.

A 15.440 second lap time in qualifying was enough to earn Kyle Courtney another pole in the 2016 season. The former Mini Stock competitor has already had a dream season in only his second year in Late Models. The green waved on the 20 lap Sportsman feature with Courtney ahead of Sise, the returning Terry Poore and Tom Collini. The top two wasted no time in beginning to inch away from the rest of the field. A caution for Raymond Shepard would erase their lead allowing Poore to close in on them. Poore would have his hands full early on with Collini as the two traded the third spot several times throughout the event. Trouble would find Brandon Taylor who spun in turn four. Taylor’s machine would slide the the track and collect Cody Brake. Brake would be able to continue but Taylor wouldn’t see the end of the 20 lap feature. Halfway through the event and the top 4 had pulled away. Grip was at a minimum and Courtney held the low line and went on to pick up his third win already in the 2016 season.

After winning three straight Mini Stock features, John Byers would have to start at the rear of the field for the nights event. With the green waving it was Thomas Clark who put his #41 into the top spot ahead of Tommy Metler and Steve Owens Jr. Clark would have trouble early on and temporarily pull off the track handing the lead over to Owens JR. With Byers already up to the second spot it wouldn’t take the defending Mini Stock Champion very long to slip by and into the lead. It was a pretty easy day at the office as Byers cruised to his fourth straight win.

The Classic race last weekend ended in a photo finish so everyone knew to expect something wild and they were not disappointed. After a quick cation for Josh Chesney it was Robert Skinner who would put his #33x machine into the lead ahead of John Stevens and points leader Justin Overton. Looking for redemption after last weeks heartbreaking loss Pressley was on the move as he was all over Stevens for the runner up spot. Stevens came into the night fresh off back to back wins at Tazewell Speedway but his road to another win hit a speed-bump as he spun in the early laps bringing out the caution. With Pressley in the second spot now, all his attention was focused on his rival from the past week. The top two were fighting hard for the lead and it boiled over in the second half of the race. Going into turn four the two cars got together sending Overton into the Infield ending his night early. It looked like Stevens was gonna be able to recover from his earlier spin but he once again looped it around in four and had two retire from the rest of the event. Robert Skinner held on the final handful of laps and picked up the win.

A 15.148 lap in qualifying earned Jason Welshan the pole for the 30 lap Late Model feature. Starting beside him would be Jesse Lowe in his #5j machine. After a false start the race got going with Welshan taking the top spot. Trouble early on for David Clark who brought out the caution just a couple laps in. The battle of the race was between Jason Cardwell and Pierce McCarter as Cardwell had to give up the third spot. After picking up the win last week, Trevor Sise seemed to have missed the setup on his #73 as he was barely holding onto a top 10 spot ahead of Ross White. Up front Welshan was giving everyone flashbacks to a couple seasons ago when he won over 20 races in one season as he pulled away from everyone. Sise would pull off the track and call it a day early. A caution on lap 23 for John Adams ensured that we would have a close finish. The battle between Cardwell and McCarter wasn’t over just yet as the two made contact in turn four coming to the finish line. That however, was behind Welshan who seemed to have it on cruise control picking up his first win of the season.

The 20 lap Street Stock feature would wrap up the action for the day. Newport Tennessee’s Kurt Owens would set fast time in qualifying with a 16.526 lap time. Starting with him on row one was Skimp Henry who set a new track record last week on his way to a dominating win. The green was out and Henry powered past Owens into the lead picking up where he left off just seven days ago. Lee Merrit was on the move as well as he moved past Tracy Wolfe putting himself into the top five. Owens was trying to reel in Henry but had his hands full with Austin Neely who wanted the second spot. After picking up the win a couple weeks ago, Rocky Ogle had another great run going in the 4th spot just behind Henry, Owens and Neely.  Brad Davis went for a spin bringing out the caution on lap 13. It was a tough night for the Tazewell, TN native who wouldn’t see the end of the 20 lap feature. Owens seemed to be able to keep pace with Henry for a lap or two but the #25 machine was hooked up off the corner and kept slowing pulling away. With just one lap left Neely was able to slip past Owens and take the second position away. His time would run out as Henry scored his second straight win.
