Henry wins a thriller

The weather man may have predicted rain but it was a great night of racing that the fans got instead.

The first feature of the night would be the 20 lap Dwarf car feature. After a false start, the race got underway with Mike Brown jumping out the the early lead but a quick caution for Jarrett McGuire slowed the pace. On the restart Matthew Bohannon took a look on the inside of the leader into turn one but had to fall back in line for the moment. It wouldn’t take long though as on lap three Bohannon made his move and took over the top spot in the early laps. Wesley Jones also had his car on a rail as he took over the runner up spot quickly setting his sights on the leader. Using the low line coming off turn two Jones powered into the top spot, taking control of the race. After another caution for some fluid on the track, The top two quickly pulled away from the field on the restart. It wasn’t about to be an easy day at the office for Jones with Bohannon closing back in on his bumper. Jones would hold off the charge and pick up the first Dwarf car win of 2016.

Up next was the 20 lap Mini Stock feature. The 2015 Mini Stock Champion John Byers returned but gone was the familiar J7 replaced by the #83. A new number would be the only difference as Byers picked up exactly where he left off last season by winning his heat race earning him the pole position for the feature. There weren’t any bugs in the new car as Byers immediately jumped out to the lead ahead of Sam Burgess and Thomas Clark who ran in the third spot. Burgess had the runner up spot but pushed up the track in turn four opening the door for Thomas Clark to take over second. Byers was pulling away early until Steve Owens Jr looped it around bringing out the caution. On the restart Joe Myers was looking to improve on his 5th position as he looked under Metler for position. At the halfway mark Byers had pulled away to a full straight away lead but his teammate Shannon Raley wouldn’t be so fortunate as he pulled off track early with mechanical issues. It would be a flawless drive for Byers who cruised to his first win of 2016.

Next on the docket would be the 20 lap Classic Car feature. A win in the heat race earlier in the day gave Josh Stevens the top spot for the A main. Stevens took the lead on the start ahead of Overholser and Keck. Trouble would find the Pressley’s early on as they tangled with one another in turn four just a couple laps into the event. The defending Classic Car Champion Justin Overton didn’t have a great starting position but he was on the move fast in the first half. Just 5 laps in and he had already moved into the second spot behind Stevens. Richie Overholser wasn’t gonna be forgotten as he closed in on Overton making it a three car battle for the lead. The laps ticked off the board and on lap 11 Overton saw an opening and dove under the leader but Stevens used the momentum on the high line to keep him at bay. With Overholser slipping back the top two pulled away for the lead. Lap after lap Overton looked low but couldn’t get the grip he needed to make the pass. Going into turn 4 on the last lap he tried it one last time but it wasn’t enough as Stevens picked up the win.

2: #98 Justin Overton
3: #88 Richie Overholser

Fresh off his win the last time out, Brandon Hutchinson set fast time in Street Stock qualifying with a 15.914 second lap. Hutchinson took the top spot with the green in the air with Pete Wright and Brad Davis giving chase. Davis wasn’t working by the hour as he took the runner up spot away from Wright on the second lap of the 20 lap feature. Coming off turn three Tracy Wolfe dove under Wright trying to take the third spot away but ended up spinning bringing out the cation and slowing the pace. Davis had been working on chasing down the leader but had his hands full with Wright who was working the very bottom line trying to wrestle away the second spot. The laps ticked away with Davis pulling away from Wright and closing in on the leader as the race approached halfway. However some right side damage seemed to be causing handling issues on the #88 machine with causing a bad push in turn four. Hutchinson would pull away and pick up his second straight win.

2: #88 Brad Davis
3: #51 Pete Wright
4: #11 Tracy Wolfe
5: #9 Bo Allison

Up next would be the 30 lap Late Model feature and it’s safe to say that things got very crazy on and off the track. A 14.479 lap in qualifying would earn Ross White the pole alongside the leader of the Boo Crew Josh Henry. The green waved with Henry and White drag racing down the backstretch for the lead. Henry would get the run off turn four and take the lead with White, Sise and David Clark in chase. Trevor Sise closed the gap on White quickly in the opening laps and took the spot away on lap five. With 7 laps in the books the top two had put some distance on White and Clark but a caution on lap 11 erased their lead. The green waved for the restart and White pounced on Sise taking the runner up spot away. However Sise would dive in deep in turn four and the two would make heavy contract. Sise would retake the spot and begin to try and chase down the leader again. It wasn’t just the top three going at it. Drew Kennedy and David Clark were also waging war on one another for the 4th spot just behind the lead trio. Finally on lap 16 Kennedy was able to slip by and take the spot away. Sise had one again closed the gap on Henry who had lead every lap of the event till that point. A caution on lap 23 seemed to be exactly what he needed. Tempers were clearly raging between White and Sise as the two once again got together on the restart with both drivers almost crashing on the backstretch. With both cars damaged White was somehow able to pass Sise and close in on Henry in the final handful of laps. Coming off turn for the finish line, White got a great run on the inside and it was a drag race to the stripe. The two made contact and Henry spun but managed to cross the line first.

Kyle Courtney set fast time in Sportsman qualifying with a 14.586 second lap. The race wouldn’t be green very long as a multi car accident in turn one brought out the red flag before the first lap was complete. Courtney took the lead when the race resumed ahead of Heath Alvey who was looking for his third consecutive win. Classic Car Champion Philip Thompson was 7th in qualifying but was on a mission to the front and he was working over Bradley Lewelling for a top five spot after just two laps. With the top three pulling away the caution waved again for Kenny Ford. This would be his second caution of the night so he had to pull pit side. With the green in the air Thompson was again on the move taking a position away from Zach Sise. Michael Courtney had a strong third place run going until he slowed unexpectedly. Thompson would work his way all the way into second putting on a great show of driving for the fans in attendance. However he would run out of laps as Courtney picked up the win.

2: #17 Philip Thompson
3: #101 Bradley Lewelling
