McIntosh repeats Hangover win

It was a bitterly cold day but that didn’t stop fans from all around from filling the grandstands full and over 200 of the best drivers from all over from showing up to see some great racing.

With seven classes of racing on the schedule the first up was the 25 lap Street Stock feature. Morristown Tennessee’s Shannon Emery put his #m2 machine on the pole with a 15.556 second lap time. The A main rolled out with 21 cars in the lineup doing battle for the $700 payday. With the race underway, Emery took command on the start ahead of Eddie Stewart, Wesley Lester and Gary Blanken who held down the fourth position. Stewart was all over the back of Emery from the get go, working the outside line coming off turn two. On lap 3 Stewart found the run he needed to power past the Morristown native and into the top spot. Trouble would find Tim Kilby as he and Vic Chandler spun bringing out the caution. Wesley Lester, the 2015 Street Stock Nationals champion was on the move early putting the pressure on Blanken for the 4th spot. It was a bad night for Tim Kilby as he brought out another caution when he went up in smoke on lap 6. Greg Estes started in the back of the field but had already moved his way up into the top five halfway through the race and a caution on lap 15 put him right on the back of the leaders. The green waved and Estes dove low going into turn two and it was a 3 wide drag race for the lead into three. You could throw a blanket over the top three cars the rest of the race. Coming off turn 4 on the last lap Stewart and Emery had one final drag race to the finish and Emery inched him out in a photo finish.

Up next was the always exciting Sportsman feature. In qualifying a 14.334 lap was enough to earn the returning Heath Alvey the top spot for the 24 car A main. Keeping him company on the front row was the youngster Kyle Courtney. Courtney was a little too eager to get going and jumped the initial start setting up a do over. The green waved and Alvey jumped into the lead with Courtney and Clyde Stanton in chase. Just three laps in the yellow waved again when Jesse Helton and Gary Blanken tangled coming off turn two. Blanken had a scary spin down into the infield which ended his night. The 2014 Sportsman Champion Wayne Rader would see his night end early as well when he slowed coming off turn four just 6 laps into the race. Courtney was hot on the heels of Alvey but got loose and spun coming off turn four. The cautions weren’t over as trouble found Helton who crashed into the backstretch wall just past halfway ending his night. After a red flag to clean up the track the race was back underway with Stanton and Reams in chase of Alvey for the lead. Alvey his his marks and went on to win the first Sportsman race of the season.

The Mod Lites were on hand for a special $1,000 payday. Jason Darocha lead the 24 car field into turn one when the green waved. Joshua Silver was the man on the move early as he moved into the runner up spot almost immediately. He wasn’t the only one picking up spots as Jamie Crutchfield and his #51 machine moved into 4th on lap 3. Silver had erased the lead Darocha had built up and on lap 6 used the iniside line to take the top spot away. Darocha wasn’t about to give up though and took the lead back a couple laps later and began to inch away but a caution on lap 8 for Ross White slowed the pace. Jeff Teeters had found the right line his car needed and had moved his way up to the leaders just past halfway. On lap 16 he pulled up to the back of the leader and moved past taking over the lead. Teeters would hold off all challengers to take home the big $1,000 paycheck.

Up next was the 40 lap $4,000 to win Super Late Model feature. Donald McIntosh has been the man to beat every time the Supers are in town. Being the defending Hangover champion it was no surprise to anyone when he qualified his #7 machine on the front row. However, he wasn’t the fastest man as the pole went to the #53 of Ray Cook who turned in a 13.858 lap. The green flew and McIntosh powered into the lead off turn two with Cook in chase. Jason Hiett had the heat turned up on Ray Cook for the runner up spot in the opening laps. The caution waved for Mack McCarter who spun in turn one slowing the action for the first time in the 40 lap event. On the restart Cook retook the second spot with an amazing power move off turn two showing us why he’s a legend in the sport of auto racing. Cook looked to have found something and he used the high line to close the gap on the leader. Lap traffic would come into play however as Cook got caught up behind a slower car allowing McIntosh to get away and stretch his lead out with just 10 laps left. McIntosh worked the lap traffic perfectly and went to pick up his second straight Hangover 40 win.

Up next was the Classic Car division. Adam Pressley and John Stevens started on the front row for the 20 lap event. Pressley put his #07 on point when the green waved ahead of Stevens and Cameron Skinner. Skinner was on the move and took the runner up spot away after just a couple laps. James Hurst had some sort of mechanical problem and slowed bringing out the caution a lap later. On the restart Skinner was all over the top spot looking low down the backstretch just ahead of Stevens who ran third. On lap 5 the door opened and Skinner took over the lead from Pressley. The top three pulled away from the rest of the pack as the laps ticked off. The Classic Cars always put on a great show and this was no exception as the top 3 drivers fought it out the rest of the race. Skinner would hold them off to pick up the win.

Ray Cook set fast time in The Crate class with a 14.253 lap. After finishing 3rd in the Super Late Model race, Cook was looking for a little redemption. With the green in the air Tom Maddox took the lead with Cook and John Ownbey the top three in line. It wouldn’t take Cook long to make his move and on lap 5 he powered past Maddox into the lead. The battle back through the field was on as well with Eddie King JR and Rusty Ballenger. Matt Henderson was on the move as well as he moved into the 4th spot with just under a dozen laps on the board. The caution waved for Adam Beeler who slowed on the backstretch ending his night early. On the restart John John Ownbey was all over Tom Maddox for the second spot behind Cook. Just a couple laps later he mad his move past and set his sights on the leader. It was a little too late as Cook had pulled away to almost a full straight lead and went on to pick up the win.

The final race of the night was the 20 lap Mini Stock feature. Bryant Idles and Derik Duggan started on point as the green waved over the 20 car field. Rusty Johnson was clearly a threat for the win as he moved past Duggan early on in the race. He wasn’t done yet and he took the top spot away a couple laps later. Bryant Idles and Johnson would tangle racing for the led. Idels would be sent to the rear with Johnson getting his spot back up front. Multiple time Tazewell speedway champion Chuck McMahan put his name in the mix as he worked over Duggan for second. Johnson found himself caught up in slower traffic and that opened the door for Duggan who slipped by on the outside off turn two. The top three pulled away from Thomas Clark who held down the 4th position. The caution waved for Joe Myers who spun slowing the pace. It looked like the night might be over for Duggan whose car began to smoke heavily under the caution. He would continue on however as the smoke dissipated once the race restarted. Duggan would hold off Johnson and McMahan to pick up the win.
