Hall scores late model victory

Earlier in the day in Sportsman qualifying points leader Terry Poore set fast time in his familiar blue #2 clocking in at a 14.650 second lap.Keeping him company on the front row would be the driver who’s been his rival recently. The tension was thick as memories of the two tangling last weekend were still fresh. The green waved and Courtney jumped out to the lead with Poore, Sawyer and Lewelling in chase. With just 3 laps on the board, Eric Register started making moves trying to work his way to the front. After just 5 of the 20 laps completed Courtney had already began to run away with the lead. That run would be slowed by a caution on lap 7 for Clyde Stanton and Lee Merritt. Courtney looked to have a strangle hold on the lead but the fight for the runner up spot was tight between Poore and Kerr. The two swapped the spot several times with the Seymour, TN native finally taking it back. Another caution at the halfway mark slowed the pace, putting everyone back in Courtney’s rear-view. The second half of the race ticked off with the #71 getting smaller and smaller in his competitors windshields. Poore would pull away from Kerr in the closing laps but it wasn’t enough to catch Courtney who scored his second straight win.

Fresh off a win the previous night at Smoky Mountain Speedway, Chris Rickett picked up where left off by setting fast time in Street Stock qualifying. A 15.884 second lap was good enough for the Morristown, TN native to put his #36 on pole for the 20 lap feature. Rickett wasted no time taking the lead as soon as the green waved. Former track Champion Dale Watson found trouble early on he looked to have some sort of engine issues in the opening laps sending him pitside. The first caution of the night waved on lap #7 for Rocky Ogle. Ogle had been having a strong run but rear end issues ended his night early. Last week Shannon Emery stole the show by making a last turn pass to win and he looked to be on a rail again tonight. Just before half-way he moved past Cook and into the second position behind Rickett. The engine issues weren’t done for the night as they also bit Jerry Hux who was forced to call it a night. Emery was closing the gap on Rickett but the race was slowed by a terrible crash on lap 13 when AJ Russell got upside down and flipped violently in between one and two. His #09 machine erupted in a massive blaze but thankfully the driver was able to escape injury. After a lengthy red flag the race was called and Rickett was awarded the win.

The Mini Stockers were up next and Randy Lane would show the way from row one. As has been par for the course in 2015, John Byers began moving to the front from the moment the green waved. On lap 2 he moved past Pressley into the second spot. Just one lap later he took the lead away from Lane. A quick caution on lap 4 slowed the pace of the leaders. Back under green Pressley was all over Tommy Metler for position. The trio of Lane, Pressley and Meter fought hard for position as the laps ticked away. On lap 12 Pressley worked the inside line and got under Lane coming off four. The three would battle for the runner up spot the entire second half of the race but it was well behind Byers who picked up another win.

The always exciting Classic Cars were up next for their 20 lap feature. Pressley jumped out with command of the top spot in the opening laps with Overholser and Overton hot on his tail. After having issues in the heat race earlier in the day, Joe Keck had to start back in the pack but it wouldn’t take him long to move into the top 5. With several wins already to his credit in 2015 Overton took the top spot just 3 laps in. However his incredible 2015 season hit a big roadblock on lap 5 as he and Pressley tangled while racing for the lead. With heavy damage both cars would be done for the night handing the lead over to Joe Keck. With the yellow gone Keck started to drive away with the lead. By lap 14 Overholser had worked his way back up into third in chase of Eli Keck. The caution waved again with just 4 laps left as Chris Evans and Ruisty Welch got together. Keck would hold on for the final restart and pick up his first win of 2015.
1: #78 Joe Keck
2: #8 Eli Keck
3: #88 Ritchie Overholser
4: #c74 Cliff Lane
5: #65 Michael Maiden

A 14.080 lap was fast enough to put Jason Cardwell on the point for the 30 lap Late Model feature alongside Michael Rutherford. Cardwell, who finished runner up last week was in no mood to play around as he took the lead immediately on the start. Jed Emert looked to be putting together a strong run by passing Brandon Gardner in the opening laps. Just 4 laps in and Cardwell had already pulled out to a big lead over Rutherford and Hall. He looked to have a cozy lead but the racing was anything but comfortable a little further back as Mitchell Childress and Adam Beeler raced for position. The caution waved for the first time on lap 8 for Jim Miller who made hard contact with the wall in turn one. The caution wold wave again almost immediately as Emert and Gardner got together. Rutherford was on an impressive run but missed his mark coming off turn 4 and tagged the outside wall which sent him off the track with damage. The battle was still hot between Childress and Beeler as they both refused to back down and give up in their quest for the 3rd spot. By lap 17 Cardwell had a huge lead of a full straight-away over Hall. It looked like he was gonna cruise to a victory but a cut tire with just two laps left ended his hopes of going to victory lane. With Cardwell off track getting repairs the lead fell into the hands of Brad Hall who held off Childress in a two lap shootout for the win.
1: #47 Brad Hall
2: #2 Mitchell Childress
3: #07 Jason Cardwell
4: #23 Layne Clifton
5: #44 Adam Beeler
6: #26 Brandon Gardner
7: #18 Michael Rutherford
8: #98 Jed Emert
9: #44 Jim Miller
