McIntosh continues 411 dominance

With a 14.991 qualifying lap, Brian Courtney let everyone know that he was gonna be one of the cars to beat by setting fast time in qualifying. Just a tick off was current Sportsman points leader Terry Poore with a 15.080. After a couple rough starts the green waved and Poore put his #2 machine into the lead, a position he’s very familiar with in 2015. The pace would be slowed many times the first of which on the very first lap with Wade Howerton. After missing the past couple races, Wayne Rader didn’t have a very happy return getting caught up in an accident on the backstretch with Clyde Stanton. Once the yellow was gone Courtney wasted no time putting pressure on Poore for the top spot. The racing was intense throughout the pack with Adam Mitchell trying to wrestle the 3rd spot away from David Vandergriff. Another caution on lap 8 for Josh Evans put the pack back into contention. Back under green the top two once again drove away determined to settle it amongst themselves. Lap after lap Courtney and Poore proved why they are two of the best at what they do. Poore used the outside line off the turn to hold the top spot and pick up his fourth win of the season and stretch his points lead out.

Setting fast time in Street Stock qualifying was Eddie Stewart with a 15.702 lap time. Stewart took off and set sail immediately as the race began ahead of Owens and Davis. Trouble would find Jerry Hux early as he spun on the very first lap of the race. Back under green Wolfe, Neely and Emery made it look like Daytona as they went three wide down the backstretch. Stewart was pulling away but the fight for second was on with Brad Davis and Kurt Owens. Davis kept working the low line especially off turn two but Owens used the momentum to keep him at bay. On lap 6 the caution waved for Dave Smith who went for a spin. Points leader Tracy Wolfe and Jon Cook made contact on lap 9 which resulted in Wolfe getting damage and being done for the night. With just 6 laps left Davis again put the pressure on Owens for the runner up spot. While they were fighting it out that allowed Austin Neely to close in and make it a three car battle. This was all behind Stewart who picked up his first win of 2015.

After winning his heat race earlier in the day, John Byers would once again secure the pole for the 20 lap Mini Stock feature. It wasn’t a smooth start as the race had to be restarted. The night would come to an end quickly for Shannon Raley who got tangled up in an accident on the start of the race. Once the race got started Byers jumped out with the lead in the opening laps with Bryant Idles and Chuck McMahan right on his bumper. Idles wasn’t satisfied with second and put Byers on notice by diving under him several times. With just 4 laps on the board the top three were already putting distance on the field. Former champion Tommy Metler had his hands full with Sam Burgess as they raced for the 4th spot. On lap 11 the race for the lead was still hot as you could throw a blanket over all three cars. Unfortunately for McMahan he wouldn’t get to play a role in the outcome of the race as he lost a tire with just 3 laps left ending his night. Idles would have one last shot at Byers but had to settle for runner up.

The final event of the night was the Southern Nationals $3,500 to win Super Late Model feature. Donald McIntosh has dominated the Super events at 411 in 2015 and tonight was no exception. However he didn’t set fast time in qualifying, that honor went to Mack McCater who turned a blistering 13.816 second lap. With the green flag in the air McIntosh and McCarter screamed into turn one and looked to make contact coming off of two. McIntosh took over the top spot with McCater in chase. The first caution waved on lap 4 for a crash involving Ross White in his #0 machine. With heavy damage to the front the night would be over before it even began as he took the slow ride on the back of the tractor out of the track. Once again if you’re a regular at 411 you already know there is no such thing as a boring race at Tennessee’s action track. Mike Marlar and Cory Hedgecock battled hard for the 5th spot. Marlar took the spot but the very next lap gave it right back. The battle for second got turned up to 10 as Vic Hill started putting pressure on McCater for the runner up spot. McIntosh began having issues with lap traffic allowing McCater and Hill to erase his lead. The yellow waved on lap 21 putting everyone back in contention. The biggest gainer was Billy Ogle Jr who was picking up spots left and right working his way up through the field. With less than 10 laps left Hill showed everyone why he’s a multiple time Super Late Model Champion as he pulled off an incredible slide job on McCater off turn two and into the second spot. Hedgecock had been slipping back after being in the top 5 earlier and on lap 32 he slowed bringing out the caution. The restart gave Hill one last chance to get past McIntosh. However it wasn’t gonna happen as the #7 took the checkered flag for the third time in 2015.
