RACE NIGHT RECAP

Jordon Horton claims Sportsman win, while Jason Welshan wins in NeSmith
By Markus Hankins
May 12th, 2014

Seymour, TN – Mother Nature tried to spoil plans of the drivers, crew, and fans of the 411 Motor Speedway on Saturday night, but in typical 411 fashion, “The Show Must Go On!” Rain would move over the speedway just as heat race action was set to get underway. In fact, the first heat was lined up and ready to pull onto the speedway, when the rain would pick up. The rain shower would last until about 8:15p, when Mitch McCarter and Joe Byrd called for a second mandatory drivers meeting. McCarter and Byrd would tell the drivers that the track would be willing to continue the night, but with features only, but it was up to the drivers. McCarter and Byrd took a poll, and mostly all the drivers elected to race instead of load up and call it a night. Track prep would get underway, and the first feature would take the green flag at 9:51p. Claiming the first checkers would be Chase King in Thunder & Lightning. Next was Sportsman, where Jordon Horton took the win. Street Stock was next, where Bradly Lewelling took the victory. Mini Stock was the next feature, where Michael Courtney started his 7th feature of the 2014 season, and won for the 7th time. He will start dead last in his next feature attempt as he’s won 4 points-paying races in a row. The final feature of the night – the NeSmith Late Model feature – saw fireworks fly early and often, resulting in one popular driver uncharacteristically show his frustration under caution which resulted in a disqualification. At the end, it was Jason Welshan taking the win in NeSmith Late Model.

We’ll take this Saturday May 17th off, and return to action on Saturday May 24th with racing in NeSmith Late Model, Sportsman, Thunder & Lightning, Street Stock, and Mini Stock. Mark your calendars as the Limited Late Model division returns to action on May 31st in a $1,000-to-win feature race! On May 24th, gates will open at 3:00p ET, with the drivers meeting set for 6:00p ET. Adult Grandstand tickets will be $10, kids 12 & under free with paying adult. Adult pit passes are $25 with kids 11 & under $15 with signed minor release. As a reminder, tier parking has been permanently closed. We’ll see you all on May 24th!

=========================================

Thunder & Lightning
Only four cars would sign-in for the Thunder & Lightning division. Leading the field to the green flag was Larry Sullivan. He would lead the first lap, but would move high through 1 and 2 and into the moisture, grabbing a piece of the wall before the front end of his machine would swing around and hit the yuke tire head-on. He would be ok. That handed the race lead over to Chase King, who led the final 9 laps enroute to his third win for the season over David Kerr and Tommy Huston.
Cautions: 1 (Lap 1)
Leaders: 2 — 4-Sullivan (1); 44-King (2-10)

Sportsman
The Sportsman feature would see sixteen cars sign-in, with Tony Lindsey leading the field to the green flag. The first caution flew on lap 1 with Josh Evans looping around in turn 2. The next caution was again on lap 1, where Kyle Cole drifted high into turn 3 and into the moisture, ending up briefly on his side, but landing back on four wheels to drive into the infield. There would be a few cautions mixed in for spins following that, but the first of two big cautions flew on lap 4, as Lindsey drifted high into 1 and 2 and got up into the moisture and tagged the wall off 2, sending his machine into the yuke tire also. The next big caution flew on lap 8 when Gina Allen would do the same as Lindsey and Sullivan did earlier in the night. It was Jordon Horton taking the lead on lap 5 and leading at the checkers on lap 9. Coming home 2nd was Joey Standridge, and powering from his 16th-place starting spot was Kip Sawyer crossing the checkers in 3rd.
Cautions: 7 (Laps 1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 8)
Leaders: 2 -– 19-Tony Lindsey (1-4); 56H-Horton (5-9)

Street Stock
The Street Stock feature would have fifteen cars sign in, but two would be knocked out of competition before the green got underway. Nick Barnard, who was the outside pole-sitter, would spin his machine in turn 2, again getting up into the moisture in 2, in front of the field, collecting David Price and Jerry Hux. Unfortunately for those two points contenders, per track rules, because they never took the green flag, they did not receive credit for starting the feature. Walter Sims would lead the first lap Bradly Lewelling stormed to the race lead for the next lap. He would be hounded by second place Sims, until Dale Jackson would spin in turn 2, collecting Sims. Caution would be called on Jackson, and Sims would retain his 2ndplace position. At the green flag, the field would get going, but only until lap 8, when caution flew as Sims received a flat tire from the damages. At the end, it was Lewelling holding off Gary Blanken and Shannon Emery in this 10-lap feature.
Cautions: 2 (Laps 6, 8)
Leaders: 2 –- 30-Sims (1); 1B-Lewelling (2-10)

Mini Stock

The Mini Stock feature saw nine cars sign in. Leading the field to the green flag was Jason Gregory. He would show the way on lap 1, when the only caution flew on lap 1 as Josh Davis spun in 4. At the green flag, Michael Courtney made short work of the cars in front of him, powering into the race lead on lap 2, and leading the way to the checkers in this 10-lap feature. He would be followed to the checkers by Jason Gregory and Mike Townsend.

Cautions: 1 (Lap 1)
Leaders: 2 -– 21-Gregory (1); 41-Courtney (2-10)

NeSmith Late Model
The final feature of the night was the NeSmith Late Models, where 16 cars would sign in. Like with all the other features, the lineup was set by draw. This put Adam Beeler as your polesitter, with Jason Welshan to his outside. First caution would fly on lap 0, as Scott Ward would scrape the wall down the backstretch, and stay high into 3, and into the moisture, his machine would hit nearly head-on with the outside wall in 3. His machine would spin around in a 180, but was found to be OK. The next caution was again on lap 0 as Mack McCarter got into the left-rear of Brad Coffey as several cars checked up in front of them. Their cars became lodged together and track officials worked for about 5 minutes to finally free the cars. This time, the field would be lined up single file. The 3rd caution was again on lap 0 as Ryan King would go for a rare loop in turn 2, but like all other cautions before this, happened with no laps on the board so it was a complete restart. The next caution flew on lap 18 where Chad Beeler finally received a flat left-rear tire and spun in 2 after being hit twice by race leader Jason Welshan. That set up a restart, which the field made it to turn 2. This time, it appeared as though Cory Hedgecock may have had a problem as he didn’t seem to get going in 2. This caused Adam Beeler to make contact with Hedgecock and spin, collecting King, Coffey, and Marty Calloway in the melee. During that caution, Hedgecock would drive around the speedway and pull alongside Beeler who still sat in turn 2. The two would appear to exchange dinner plans, when Hedgecock would pull away under the advice of race control. However, apparently Hedgecock didn’t like the dinner plans Adam Beeler had in mind, when still under the same caution, Hedgecock would ram Adam Beeler down the backstretch. Per track rules of no ramming another car under caution, this resulted in a disqualification for Hedgecock from the event. This set up a green, white, checker finish where Welshan took the checkered flag over Jake Teague and Adam Beeler.

Cautions: 5 (Laps 0, 0, 0, 18, 18)
Leaders: 1 -– 29-Welshan (1-20)
