RACE NIGHT RECAP

JIMMY ELLIOTT TAKES NIGHT 1 OF THE OLE SMOKY SPRING NATIONALS WITH LAST-LAP PASS
By Markus Hankins
April 5th, 2014

Night 1 of the Ole Smoky Spring Nationals are in the books, and it was a great – and at one point wild – night for the cars and stars of the 411 Motor Speedway and NeSmith Late Model Touring Series. Beginning the night, it was Michael Courtney and Jason Gregory battling for the lead, but it was eventually Courtney taking the win in Mini Stock. The 2ndfeature of the night saw Heath Alvey taking the checkers, leading all 20 laps, but over the final 10 laps Jordon Horton would make some noise, but could only reel in Alvey to about a half car length. The final feature of the night was the Ole Smoky Moonshine 40, where we saw Cory Hedgecock set fast time with a New Divisional Record for NeSmith, with a lap of 13.826. Joining him on the front row was Jimmy Elliott. Hedgecock would show the way from lap 1 to lap 4, when Ryan King muscled his way around Hedgecock. On a lap 24 restart, Elliott was able to power back into the 2nd spot around Hedgecock. Elliott would ride in the 2nd spot and peek for the race lead from lap 24 through 39, when King, working lap traffic in his windshield, would leave just enough room for Elliott to power inside in turn 3 for the final time. The two would make contact, and it was Jimmy Elliott out of Cleveland, TN taking the last-lap win.

Join us again tonight (Saturday April 5th) for the Ole Smoky Moonshine 50 for the NeSmith Late Model Touring Series, Night 2 of the Ole Smoky Spring Nationals at 411 Motor Speedway. NeSmith will be gunning for $3,000 to win across 50 laps tonight. Street Stock and Thunder & Lightning will each have a 20-lap, $1,000 to win feature. If you have a 2-day Tier or Grandstand pass, or if you have a 3-day pit pass, you’re covered for tonight. If not, it’ll be Adults $15 in the stands, kids 6-11 $5, and 5 & under free. Tier will be $25 per person, regardless of age. Adults in the pits $35, kids 11 & under $15 with a signed waiver. We’ll have live updates all night long on Facebook and Twitter, with the webcam rolling and live commentary taking place on the webcam. Links to all services can be found under the “Links” tab across the top of our website.

=========================================

Mini Stock
The first feature of the night saw Jason Gregory and Michael Courtney lead the field to the green flag. Courtney would steal the race lead and lead the first lap, but then Gregory would gain some steam and power into the race lead on lap 2. He would hold onto the lead until lap 8, when Courtney would reclaim the race lead. The first caution of the feature flew on lap 9 when Gregory would get tangled up with the lap car of Joe Myers. Myers would get turned head-on toward the wall, but before hitting the wall he was able to get stopped. However, defending champion in the Mini Stock division, Rocky McNabb, couldn’t get slowed in time as he had little time to react, and would slam into Myers machine and end his night. Gregory and Myers would both also call it a night. On the restart, Courtney maintained the race lead until the 2ndcaution flew on lap 14, as Heath Raper would stall his machine. On the restart, it was Courtney jumping to the lead and never looking back as he claimed the win over Bryant Idles and Derik Duggan.

Cautions: 2 (Laps 9, 13)
Leaders: 41-Courtney (1, 9-20); 21-Gregory (2-8)
Time of Race: 13 minutes 9 seconds

Sportsman
The 2nd feature of the night saw Heath Alvey and Scott Gardner lead the field to the green flag. The first caution immediately flew on lap 0 after contact between Josh Beal and Adam Mitchell would send both cars around. That set up a complete restart with everybody retaining their original starting position. At the drop of the green flag, the field would make it to turn 2, where again on lap 0, Alvey would go around. Again, it was a complete restart. The 3rd time was the charm, as Alvey blasted into the race lead off turn 2 until caution flew on lap 2 after James Cole punted Kip Sawyer. James Cole would be ticketed with the caution. On the restart, again it was Alvey powering into the lead off 2. He would lead until the final caution flew on lap 10, after Sawyer would go for his 2nd spin cycle off the front bumper of Austin Atkins. That set up the final run to the checkers, where Alvey was able to hold off a charging Jordon Horton for the win. Coming home in the 3rd spot was Wayne Rader.

Cautions: 4 (Laps 0, 0, 2, 10)
Leaders: 7-Alvey (1-20)
Time of Race: 12 minutes 58 seconds

Ole Smoky Moonshine 40
The final feature of the night was the Ole Smoky Moonshine 40, where Cory Hedgecock out of Maryville, TN would set a New Divisional Record for the NeSmith, with a lap of 13.826. Joining him in leading the field to the green was Jimmy Elliott out of Cleveland, TN. The field would get the green flag, with Hedgecock stealing the lead off 2. The first caution flew on lap 2, after contact between Josh Henry out of Newport, TN, and Tanner Works out of Cleveland, TN would send Works for a loop in turn 2. On the restart, it was Hedgecock again blasting into the race lead. The field wouldn’t stay green very long as the 2nd caution flew on lap 3, as Todd Morrow out of East Ridge, TN would stall his machine in turn 4. On the restart, Hedgecock held onto the race lead for the next 2 circuits, when Ryan King out of Seymour, TN would power into the race lead on lap 5. He would open the distance up over Hedgecock until the 3rd and final caution flew on lap 24 when Lady Luck showed her hand, after the 3rd-place running Elliott got tangled with a lapped car on the frontstretch and spun. NeSmith officials ticketed the lap car with the caution, allowing Elliott to reclaim his 3rd place position. On the restart, he would power into the 2nd spot around Hedgecock, and begin hounding King for the race lead. Lap traffic would factor into the finish, as King was showing the way on the final lap. Sailing into turn 3, King would leave just enough of the bottom for Elliott to pull inside. The two would make contact, and off turn 4 it was Elliott taking the last-lap win over King. Hedgecock would fade to a 3rd place finish after setting the New Divisional Record for NeSmith and placing his machine on the pole. In 4th place it was Walker Arthur out of Forest, VA, rallying from 12th starting position. Arthur put on a show, as on the final two restarts, he would steal 3 positions on each restart, vaulting him to his very impressive 4th place finish. Rounding out the top 5 was Josh Adkins out of Talladega, AL.

Cautions: 3 (Laps 1, 2, 23)
Leaders: 23-Hedgecock (1-4); 52-King (5-39); J39-Elliott (40)
Time of Race: 27 minutes 18 seconds
