RACE NIGHT RECAP

Mod-Mini
In Mod-Mini action, we saw the “Rooftop Rocket” Rocky McNabb take the checkers in dominating fashion. Chris Kelly would ride in the 2nd position until he would pull into the infield on lap 8, while smoke will start billowing from the car of Cindy Poore going into turn 1 and the caution would fly almost at the same time, which would allow Kelly to seek the attention of his crew members. McNabb would run away on the restart, as Cory Cate would then find himself in the 2nd position with Brian “Bones” Berkley riding in the 3rd position. Caution would fly one final time on lap 18 after Josh Beal would drop fluid on the track and pull off the race track, setting up a 2-lap shootout. Cate would challenge McNabb in 1 and 2, but off turn 2, Cate would have to fall in and settle for 2nd. After the dust settled, McNabb would be your feature winner, 2nd would be Cory Cate, with Berkley 3rd, and points leader Tommy Metler in the 4th position. Kelly would cross the line 4th on the track, but he was determined to be 2 laps down to the field.

Topless Modifieds
The Topless Modified division was the next one onto the speedway, and the action was intense at times. Chase King and Layne Clifton would lead them down to the green flag. C. King would get the early jump, with Clifton in tow. Josh Driskill would power to the inside of Clifton going into turn 3, and Clifton would give Driskill plenty of room off turn 4, jerking the wheel away from Driskill, opening the door for Mike Lewis to take over the 3rd spot, but that was short-lived as Clifton would power back inside Lewis to reclaim the 3rd position and look to run down the leaders. Ronnie King would go high a little too high, almost losing control of his machine, but he would gather it back up and hold his position. Caution would fly for the first time on lap 4 as Marvin Romines would spin in turn 2 to bring out the caution. Green flag would fly once again, and C. King would get the jump on the start, with Driskill in 2nd, Clifton in 3rd, and 4th being Lewis, but Lewis quickly overtakes Clifton to take over the 3rd position, and that battle opens up the door for Luke Fox, who is having a great run tonight, as Fox is trying to take over the 4th spot. Fox pulls inside Clifton in turn 2 but Clifton will shut the door. C. King has now caught the back half of the field, and Chase will have to be very careful, as the next few cars have beat and banged on each other. Speaking of beating, Marty Goodman is done fighting for his position, and if you can’t pass them, why not spin them? That’s what has happened, as Goodman turns Johnny Ridings into the infield, and caution will fly here on lap 13. Ridings now shows his displeasure, as Goodman now pulls off the racetrack. And now we see trouble with the points leader Josh Driskill, he will pull his machine into the infield with steam coming from the front of his car, either the radiator was busted by debris, or the motor began overheating. Tonight is definitely a hot night, and if you have cooling problems, they show up on hot, humid nights like tonight. With that caution, it’s now a 7 lap dash to the checkers. Chase King powers away on the restart, while Lewis will follow, hoping for a mistake from the young driver in the lead. Luke Fox has now moved into the 3rd spot, and Clifton appears to have some kind of suspension problem, as I’ve never seen his car jack the left-front tire as high as it’s lifting up. That’ll open the door for Keith Gregory to claim the 4th position in the closing laps. Nice run through the field for Gregory! With Driskill’s troubles, the points chase is definitely getting tight as the season is almost half over.

Super Trucks
Next onto the speedway is the Chris Breeden Realty Executives “Super Truck Shoot-out” event, and it’s unfortunate that we’ve only got 6 trucks running for $500! Comer pushes Freddy Hillard up high off turn 2 on the start, and Comer will drive away and never be challenged again in this one. Freddy Hillard dropped back to 3rd, as Freddy Hillard powers around Steve Hillard to reclaim the 2nd position, but Steve Hillard wants the spot back, but he’ll fall in behind Freddy on lap 3. Caution will fly on lap 10 for debris in turn 2. With the green flag back in the air, the field would only get to turn 1 and Chris Shepherd would spin, as the caution will fly one final time. With the green flag back in the air, the final 10 laps would see Comer pull away, with Freddy Hillard finishing 2nd.

Street Stocks
Next on the track is the Street Stocks, and this class is notorious at all tracks for rough racing, which gives the fans something to talk about all week! This feature was no different! Wartburg Speedway regular Reagan Williams and Darrell Mayes lead them down into turn 1. Williams takes off with the early lead, with Mayes in 2nd, and Jonathan Sims in 3rd. Multiple feature winner Brad Mills and Phil Davis though are fighting for the 4th spot. Mills will take over the spot and look to challenge for the win in this one. Raymond Shepard has moved into the 4th position, as Davis is starting to drop back. With 5 laps in the books, Sims is right on the rear bumper of Williams, beating and banging, and finally with 6 laps in, Sims slams into Williams, cutting the left-front tire down on Williams’ ride. Williams pulls off the track to the attention of his crew. The track will give him 3 laps to get a tire, and the field makes 3 laps and Williams still hasn’t returned to the speedway, so the green flag will be thrown with Sims restarting in the back. Mayes has now inherited the lead, with Brad Mills in 2nd spot, but caution will quickly fly as Brandon Wilson spins in turn 4 here on lap 7. Williams returns to the speedway, but is one lap down. Green flag back in the air, but that won’t last long as Brad Mills spins in turn 2. The field would see the green flag again, but they make it turn 1 as Justin McCarter runs under the rear bumper of Davis and busts the radiator. Track officials clean that up and the green flag will fly again. Mayes takes off with the lead, with Shepard taking over the 2nd position, and Jonathan Sims has worked his way back up to 3rd. Williams is charging through the pack, hoping to pass the leader to get his lap back the hard way, but that doesn’t last, as caution will fly on lap 9 as Daniel Reese has trouble of some sort and has stalled. He’ll get a push and return to the track. Green flag will fly once more, and Mayes pulls away with the lead, with Shepard and Sims in tow. Caution will fly one last time on lap 13 as Brad Mills has been turned into the infield by Reagan Williams. Time has expired on this one, and it’ll be a green/white/checkers finish. Mayes fires with the lead, but Sims wants it. They’ll make another lap and get the white flag. Off turn 2, Sims will bump Mayes from behind, then turn left and pull inside. Mayes wants this win bad, as he runs Sims into the infield. Sims, however, brakes, then powers back on the outside of Mayes. Mayes see’s him and goes up the banking to block Sims again, but Shepard has outsmarted both drives, as the points leader turns left in turn 3, and blisters both Mayes and Sims and will take the win by a couple of car lengths! What a race! Shepard was 3rd going into turn 3, and comes away with the win on the last lap! Awesome race Raymond “Rightfoot” Shepard!

Classics
The Classics are the next division onto the speedway. Mack McCarter is on a hot streak this season, and last week, a random fan walked into the tower and slipped promoter Chris Corum an envelope with $100 to go to the first Classic to beat McCarter. McCarter would have to start in the back, but as witnessed, that was no problem at all. He would move into the lead on lap 6 and never look back. The only caution of the race would fly on lap 14 as Bobby Bohanan spun in turn 2. With the green flag in the air, the last 6 laps would be ran single-file.

Late Models
The next division on the speedway, is the ultra-competitive late models. Earlier in the evening, we saw 2009 Champ Jason Cardwell lay down a lap of 14.554 to set Fast Time, where shortly after, he would spin a 3 and start 3rd in the Chuck Ward Real Estate Investments Fast Car Dash, but we saw the first 3 restarts prove costly for Cardwell and crew. Current points leader Josh Collins would win the dash and start on the pole for the feature. By the time the feature rolled around, the Cardwell Brothers Racing team would have the front-end patched up. Collins and Ballenger led the field down into turn 1, but Don Scalf would spin in turn 4, which started a long night for Scalf. Green flag would fly again, Collins taking the lead once again, but this time, Scott “Superman” Sexton would take over the 2nd position, as we witnessed Ross White pull up into the 3rd spot, dropping Ballenger back to 4th, and with the door still open, Jason Cardwell would come through and look to challenge White for 3rd. The caution would then fly on lap 1 as Clyde Stanton spins off turn 4 and backs into the frontstretch wall. The green flag would fly again, as Collins powers away and Sexton right behind, as White would power down low on Sexton, but the high line is the preferred line and Sexton will pull away down the backstretch. Cardwell will then look to the inside of White, put White up on the high line and Cardwell down low, and White has the preferred line and will pull away. Caution will fly on lap 10 as Josh “The Jet” Henry stalls on the front stretch.

With the green flag back in the air, Collins will power away, as Cardwell dives to the inside to challenge, but both Sexton and White will motor away off turn 2, but Cardwell isn’t falling behind much. White, Cardwell, side-by-side, they’ll run side-by-side through the corners for the next couple laps, as the caution will fly on lap 12 after Pierce McCarter spins, collecting Heath Alvey. Green flag back out, Collins powers away once again, but here comes Ross White, he’ll power to the inside of Sexton, and he’ll hold to the inside of Sexton down the back straightaway. But off turn 4, White will fall in behind Sexton, as White will now be challenged by Cardwell for the 3rd position, but White will pull away and try to set his sights on the top 2. Cardwell still challenging White for the 3rd spot, as Ballenger is starting to run down these 2. Cardwell continues looking low in the corners, but the low line isn’t the line tonight. Caution will fly on lap 21 as Bradly Lewelling spins in turn 4 and Sexton will have to take evasive action. Green flag will fly once again, but will be short lived, as we see Ross White has been turned or spin in turn 2, and Eric Tipton and Alvey get a piece of the action, and Ryan King spins to avoid.

Green flag will fly with 9 laps still remaining. Collins will motor away on the start once again, Sexton this time looks inside of Collins, but he’ll fall back in line going into turn 3. Cardwell has now caught Sexton, and they’ll battle, as Collins tries to pull away. Ross White has made a nice recovery, as he’s went from the rear to 8th after his incident on lap 21. Cardwell and Sexton are side-by-side, neither driver wants to give up the 2nd position, as these 2 are catching Collins with only 2 laps left. Collins still your leader, but now he’s caught Don Scalf. Scalf is in the middle of the race track, moves up high, forcing Collins down low. Sexton flies down the backstretch, he will blaze around Scalf and pull outside of Collins. Collins, forced to the low side, Sexton now up high, they’ll drag race to the checkered flag, and WOW, WHAT A BARN BURNING FINISH! Sexton JUST edges Collins by a mere 3 inches for the win! Great finish!

Pure Mini
In Pure-Mini action, we saw heat race winner and current points leader Dalton King take the win over Mike Townsend, Jason Shultz, Bobby McClain, and James Mitchell
